St. Francis Women’s Guild was formed in the early 1960s. Meetings took place once a month in the original building on the site of the present church. In between meetings we met socially for coffee at each others homes. In the early days there would be 30-40 members.
We took responsibility for:
1. Catering for various occasions, including:
• First Holy Communion • Confirmation • Christmas Bazaar • Visiting dignitaries
2. Representing the Church at the Royal Show, including arranging themed flower displays (by I. Hix) and serving teas in the Church Pavilion.
3. Supporting Father Snell in whatever he asked us to do.
Throughout the year we had various speakers, outings and fund raising events, with an annual dinner at our year end, which Father Snell always attended. We were always delighted to be able to present Father with a cheque, which was as a result of various fund raising activities.
The Guild, as a formal organisation, has now disbanded, but we do meet as friends for coffee once a month. Our younger members are now in their 60s!!!
We do, however, still represent St. Francis Church each year by serving teas at the Royal Show. We have been doing this most enjoyable task for more than 30 years.
